An established reinsurer engaged SelectX to undertake a programme of evidence-based medical research to support the ongoing development of its underwriting manual.

Over the course of the programme, SelectX reviewed a range of medical topics including various cancers, mental health conditions, stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA), and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Each research review produced a structured output, including a list of relevant references, a summary of the key papers reviewed, an assessment of the implications for underwriting, and proposed updates to both the text and rating guidance for life, critical illness and disability income products.

Proposed revisions were discussed with the relevant underwriting stakeholders before being incorporated into the reinsurer’s underwriting manual.

By engaging SelectX in this way, the reinsurer was able to keep its manual aligned with emerging medical evidence while avoiding a significant drain on scarce internal resources.
