Underwriting manual health checks are a service that SelectX undertakes for insurers and reinsurers seeking an independent assessment of their underwriting guidance and platform.

One reinsurer approached SelectX because it believed its underwriting manual was underperforming compared with competing market offerings and requested an independent review.

The assessment covered functionality, usability, quality of content and the appropriateness of rating guidance. The existing platform was examined in detail, including search functionality (type-ahead and full-text), navigation tools, internal links and pop-ups, and analysis of frequently accessed pages.

Usability of the embedded calculators was also reviewed, including those relating to BMI, blood pressure, cardiovascular risk and several cancer risk tools.

The content itself was assessed for clarity of language and ease of interpretation. A selection of rating tables were reviewed and tested using representative case studies to evaluate how easily underwriters could interpret the guidance.

The final report included an overview of the underwriting manual landscape, a comparison with the manuals used by market leaders, and a set of recommendations for improvement.
